RINGS FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURNS
Several months after closing down, Jeff “Shooter” Graham has decided to reopen the doors of the once great organization. IFN recently caught up with Graham following the announcment of the organizations second show.
IFN: Hello Shooter, how are you today?
JG: I'm good man, thanks for asking.
IFN: It’s been months since the initial closing of Rings, and over a year since the shutdown of the IFA and TFC, what made you decide to reopen your organization?
JG: There are alot of good fighting organizations. Jungle Chaos was one of the best and they had a great run but sadly they closed. I've seen too many good leagues just fall apart because the owners had a lot of great ideas but no time to get it done. I've had a lot of success in the past and I thought it was a perfect time to restart Rings. We were off to a great start but time and Rear Naked Radio made me close it down. I'm just happy to have a chance to show the world what a great league we can be.
IFN: Many people were shocked when your previous fighting organizations closed down, what led to the demise of these organizations and what will you do differently this time around to ensure its success?
JG: Some people don't have the time to properly manage the functions of a league. Others get bored. There's a real science to running your own league. You need to have all your ducks in a row. Another big part of it is knowing how to deal with people. That was why I think the IFA/TFC was so well done. My former partner in crime Scorcho was very creative and had a lot on the ball with the organization of a league. His problem was in handling people. That seems to be my strength.
IFN: The first card back went very smoothly with a number of interesting fights, what were your favorite moments of the night, and so far which of these fighters do you see potentially becoming the next big thing here in Rings?
JG:I love just seeing the fights unfold. Wars were fought. Thats the best thing for me. I like the characters. Sykes, Thomson, Uno, Grogen. The guys that talk alot and hype the fights are what makes them great I think. I'm also excited to see guys like Jin Woo Pak return. He's been around since the IFA and was one of my favorites.
IFN: There seems to be a wealth of new promising talent in the league, but some of the stars we knew from the first Rings incarnation seem to be missing. Have you had trouble re-signing your former fighters, or was this a strategy employed to showcase the new up and comers?
JG:People move on. I'd love to have some of those guys back but some have retired or just gone to different organizations. There's still some time. Some people might pop up.
IFN: Currently the league is ripe with LHWs, MWs, and WW’s, but is fairly lacking in the LW department. What do you see happening with this division?
JG:I hope to see it grow. If the division doesn't grow soon I'll have to "encourage" the fighters to move to WW.
IFN: With the restructuring of the league and the dissolution of the belts from the first run, every fighter here is starting with a clean slate. Even fighters that have returned like Jimmy Thomson, Norbert Sykes, and Joachim Krieger are starting back at ground zero. When do you anticipate crowning the new champions in each division?
JG:I hope by the fourth or fifth card at the latest.
IFN: Speaking of Thomson and Sykes, these two are no strangers to each other and are set to square off in the next event at RFC 2. How do you see this fight panning out?
JG:First I wanted to put this fight off. These two are two of the top fighters in the world. Jimmy is in my honest opinion a more well rounded fighter. Still Norbert has always seem to have his number. I know I shouldn't pick favorites but it would be nice to see Jimmy win this one. In the end the fans and Rings FC are the winners. People always love to see these two fight.
IFN: You may have taken a sabbatical from your position as league president, but this was hardly a vacation for you. During your time off you used the time to delve back into the fight game for a while as well as another new project, Rear Naked Radio. How did these endeavors compare to running Rings?
JG: Well Conrad Howell is a friend of mine. We met in the IFA and when he told me he was starting a league of his own, I knew it was a great chance for me to get back into fighting. The radio show came from the fact that Scorcho and I had a good run with the IFA's Tapout radio show. We just wanted to broaden our perspectives. I don't see them comparing to Rings but rather complimenting it. Rings FC also partially sponsors the radio show along with Tap Or Sleep brand clothing.
IFN: Thank you for your time with us today.
JG: It was my pleasure. I look forward to seeing you at the fights.

RFC 1: RING OF FIRE
RFC 1 began with a fight between the first RFC HW champion Jimmy Thomson and newcomer, Mauricio Silva. In the opening minute of the first round Silva head butts Thomson in the face and is issued a yellow card. Perhaps angered by the illegal blow, Thomson went to work using his world famous Muay Thai skills landing several heavy knees to Silva’s body. The majority of the round was spent in the clinch where Jimmy continued to land knees and was effectively able to neutralize Mauricio and avoid any major damage until the closing minutes of the round when Silva broke free from the clinch to land a menacing straight cross to send his opponent to his knees. The round ends with both fighters exhausted and Thomson appearing to have the edge in the fight.
Round two saw a much slower version of what the fighters had to offer in the first. Thomson continued to grab a hold of Silva in the clinch sending knees to the fighter’s body and legs earning a Unanimous decision victory at 10:00 of Rd. 2
The second heavyweight fight of the night featured another mainstay in RFC, in Norbert Sykes, facing newcomer Joel Alvarez. Alvarez showed great takedown defense thwarting The Diesel’s first several takedown attempts. Alvarez then showed some more of his wrestling skill by bringing Sykes to the mat himself. From there Sykes showed great ground defense allowing only a couple shots from Alvarez through before the referee ordered a standup, while issuing yellow cards to both fighters for stalling.
After the stand-up, Sykes immediately catches Alvarez with an eye gouge, earning his second yellow card in less than a minute. Alvarez takes his time to recover and proceeds to stuff another takedown attempt by Sykes. Changing up his game plan, Sykes then lands several devastating punches and a flying knee to the head of Alvarez. After a combination of punches sent Alvarez down to the mat, Sykes follows him to the ground quickly gaining his back and finished the fight via strikes from rear mount at 6:12 of Rd. 1
The next bout showed some impressive striking from light heavyweight Johnson Heat as he earned a TKO victory over Jason Kash. Heat was able to set up the TKO by using excellent stand-up skills rocking Kash on several occasions before knocking him to the mat with a hard knee to the body. Heat quickly pounced and threw in some solid strikes from the guard of the dazed Kash before the ref jumped in to stop the fight due to from ground strikes at 2:56 of Rd. 1.
In more light heavyweight action Danilo Braga submitted Royler Sobral in a ground war. For the majority of the fight it seemed as though it would be a stalemate between the two submission artists until Braga managed to secure a hammer lock forcing a tapout from Sobral at 9:36 of Rd. 1
The first middleweight fight of the night was between MMA veteran Conrad Howell and Thiago Santos. The first round started with the fighters trading strikes within the clinch with Howell gaining the slight advantage in the exchanges, until Santos brought Howell to the mat with a leg sweep takedown. Howell throu up a number of submission attempts, never really catching Santos with any of them, until the referee orders a stand-up and issues a yellow card for stalling to both fighters. Howell picked up from where he started throwing knees at Santos from the clinch, but no significant damages was incurred by either fighter. At the end of round one it would appear that Howell would be ahead on the judges scorecards.
The second round began much the same as the first with the fighters trading blows in the clinch until Howell scores his own leg sweep takedown. Santos showed a very active guard throwing up several submission attempts even coming close to finishing his opponent with a spinning toe hold. After another stand-up and a second yellow card for stalling is issued to Howell, Santos brings the fight back down to the mat with another leg sweep takedown. Just as Howell had the edge in the standup Santos appeared to have the edge on the ground again almost coming close to submitting his opponent, this time with a “million dollar dream.” When time expires the judges all score it in favor of Thiago Santos for a Unanimous decision victory at 10:00 of Rd 2.
In more middleweight action, Perfecto Uno Jr. dominated David Stone on both the feet and the ground, using knees from the clinch to soften his opponent and solid wrestling skills to control him on the ground. Stone showed good defense in not being stopped by Perfecto Uno Jr., but was unable to mount any significant offense of his own. Perfecto Uno Jr. maintained dominant position for the majority of the fight and grinded his way to a Unanimous decision victory at 10:00 of Rd. 2.
Middleweight Tom Atlas earned a Unanimous decision victory over MMA veteran, Devin Rand. Rand showed some vicious stand-up in the first knocking his opponent down at one point, but offered very little offense on the ground. Atlas kept throwing punches and submissions at Rand which were enough for the judges to award him the victory at 10:00 of Rd. 2
Jin Woo Pak made his return to MMA to face Benny Grogen. Unfortunately for Pak, it was not his triumphant return, as he lost via Unanimous decision. Grogen came out guns blazing landing several shots staggering Pak. Pak showing his experience maintained composure and was able to bring the aggressive striker to the ground. Pak maintained a steady attack on the ground until Grogen worked his way backed to his feet to land another barrage of strikes hurting the Korean fighter once again. But much like the first time Pak was able to get the fight to the ground and buy some time to recover. Grogen once again manages to get back to his feet, unloading and knocking Pak to the ground. Grogen tries to finish and jumps into the half guard eventually working his way to mount before the round ends.
In the second round Grogen again knocks Pak to the ground showing clear dominance in the stand-up department, and engages Pak on the ground. Pak sweeps but is unable to keep Grogen down. Grogen once again knocks his opponent to the ground a rides out dominant position until the end of the fight.
Welterweight fighter, Miles Allen, showed promising stand-up garnering a TKO stoppage from a hook at 3:39 of Rd. 1 over Colm Murphy. Allen was able to avoid Murphy’s takedown attempts and prevented the Irish fighter from mounting any real offense on the feet. Never relenting, Allen poured on the punishment until the referee had to stop the fight.
Beowulf McDougal showed some excellent submission skills forcing Hamish McAndershannon to tap out from a heel hook at 3:11 of Rd. 1.
Rex Williams defeated Victor Gillean in the nights only lightweight contest via spinning toe hold at 5:19 of Rd. 1. Williams showed that sometime patience and opportunity can pay off against a more aggressive fighter. Gillean shot in first to score the takedown and top position throwing punches at Williams left and right. But Williams showed an impressive guard and was able to withstand or deflect much of the offense his opponent had to offer. After a stand up from the ref and another takedown by Gillean, Williams saw an opening securing the toe hold. Gillean tried to punch his way out of the submission hold, but it proved to be too much and he was forced to tap.

PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. is His name. You will call Him by His name, Perfecto Uno Jr.!
IFN: Apologies Perfecto Uno Jr. MMA fans are no stranger to the name Uno, or numero Uno, if you will, as you are presumably a descendant of Perfecto Uno. What would you say to those that compare you to your father, or those might even go so far as to say that you may as well be the same person?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. laughs at the insolence of those who say that Perfecto Uno and Perfecto Uno Jr. are the same person. Perfecto Uno Jr. is the best pro-wrestler since His father, Perfecto Uno. Perfecto Uno Jr. will accomplish more than His father by becoming the first, RINGS MW and multi divisional, champion. Perfecto Uno Jr. will continue the legacy of the Uno family through dominance in RINGS!
IFN: You both come from a pro-wrestling background, which many view as more of a performance and showmanship than it is sport, what is your view on this?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. will prove, just as His father did, that pro wrestling is the best martial art in the world. It will be undeniable when Perfecto Uno Jr. lays waste to the lesser martial arts such as jiu-jitsu and kickboxing!
IFN: Can you tell us a little about your mask, does it hold any significance?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr.'s mask is ichiban. That is all Perfecto Uno Jr. has to say.
IFN: You recently defeated David Stone in your RFC debut in a long but fairly one sided affair, earning a victory via Unanimous Decsion. Was there any point that you felt like you could have finished him?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. does what he pleases. If Perfecto Uno Jr. wants to entertain the crowd by way of 30 second KO with a Shining Perfecto Wizard, He will. If Perfecto Uno Jr. wants to awe the crowd with the Perfecto Uno Lock III, He will. If Perfecto Uno Jr. wants to bore the crowd into submission by drawing out a fight and punishing his opponent...He will. Perfecto Uno Jr. does what He wants and will continue to do so.
IFN: During your match with Stone, you not only showed an impressive ground game, but surprised many viewers with some solid knees in the clinch, is your stand-up something you've been training a lot lately?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. says that his pro-wrestling technique is second to none. That is just one facet of pro-wrestling, says Perfecto Uno Jr.
IFN: Speaking of your training, you are a part of UTOR (Unhealthy Tsunami of Rage), headed up by, Benny Grogen. What is the team dynamic like there?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. says the team dynamic is dynamic. Perfecto Uno Jr. will continue to teach His pro-wrestling expertise to His constituents in order to rule RINGS. So that they can pawn the gold title belts, by a P.I.M.P. pad and release their Unhealthy Tsunami of Rage on some poor, unsuspecting whores.
IFN: Your next fight is against Tom Atlas, who is also coming off of an impressive victory over Derek Rand, how are you approaching this fight, and how do you see it playing out?
PU Jr.: Perfecto Uno Jr. laughs when you say impressive. Perfecto Uno Jr. says that Tom Atlas was anything but impressive against "Rando". Tom Atlas has no pro-wrestling skills and that Perfecto Uno Jr. will go Strong-uh Style-uh, over his unimpressive bootay!
IFN: There you have it. Thanks again for you time and good luck in your bout.
