I know rampage is fightin jardine and i think thats a little interesting. I think that Carwin V. Gonzaga and Maynard vs. Jim miller are interesting bouts as well. But this is the fight that has got me goin for a while now. Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann.
Condit was a force in the WEC stopping guys left and right. the hiromitsu miura fight was unbelievable. right now he as this aura of invincibility and rather than give the former WEC an easy first fight in the big show they seek to test him right out of the gate pitting him against the agressive and dynamic martin kampmann
Kampmann has won his last 5 of 6 and out of those 5, only one has gone to a decision he's not just winning fights hes running through guys. the MCfedres fight he was pushed and tested realizing that despite being a former kickboxer he didnt want to trade with a guy who throws wild bombs. so he took him to the ground and submitted him. he has a very good ground game the fact that he is the only person to defeat thales leites (Silva will and MArquardt got screwed out a victory with points being taken away). the only time i saw him get his ass kicked was against the bigger stronger Marquardt who has been nothing short of a beast since his loss to silva.
The other thing that really gets me going about this fight is that Condit is 24 and Kampmann is 26 and they have a combined record of 36-6 are you kidding me? they are young and dangerous guys. also between those 46 combined bouts there has been a grand total of 2 decisions. thats 18 submissions and 16 Knockouts. This is when the unstoppable force meets the immovable object.
standup: I definatly give an edge to Kampmann in the standup. i think he has more of a orthodox style to him. hes got good hands and deadly kicks. watched a few of his muay thai fights and let me tell you, ya dont wanna get kicked by this guy. more than one guy has dropped to his shots. dont make the mistake of thinking im undermining condits striking either. he has crazy good knees and quick hands. bombs blast though from condit. Carlos has more of a natural fighting style he likes to keep his hands at his waist and trade with folks. not the best idea against a tough striker in Kampmann who is new to the welterweight division and can seriously throw down.
Interesting note: both of Kampanns losses were TKOs. and while striking is probably his best course for victory against Condit getting into a slugfest rather than a kickboxing bout could be dangerous.
Ground: I think there isnt a question who has the better ground game. Condit has submitted his last four out of five opponents. he has an active guard and some nasty ground and pound. you didnt get to see alot of it against Miura but trust me you dont want this guy on top of you. thats the other interesting thing about condit most of his time on the ground in the WEC was on his back. youd think after a while guys would realize its not a great idea to put this guy on the ground and sit in his guard. Condit isnt the quickest to throw up submissions but almost every one he goes for he gets because of his setup from his back. Now Kampmann again i think has a very underated ground game. decent ground and pound good submissions. most of the submissions are on the simple side though head and arm triangles along with rear naked chokes are how he usually gets it done. But thats okay he doesnt need it to be his largest weapon when it hits the mat he passes very well and gets in dominant positions to lay some punishment.
Interesting note: like Kampmann Condits biggest strength could also be his biggest weakness three of his four losses are by submission. however he did go the distance with jake shields without getting submitted so maybe its making something out of nothing.
Clinch work and takedowns: im not gonna lie i think this is where i think both fighters are they're weakest. I watched condit get thrown all over the place in his last fight. just constantly dumped on his head and punished. Kampmann isnt the best at takedowns but when he needs to he can get it done. I think his clinchwork is pretty good as well however i think hes going to want to use it to keep the fight on its feet like i mentioned. I dont know how good Condits wrestling is but from what i hear hes really working on it. i hope so because i have seen more than one guy put him down and quick.
finally the pick: The thing is while condit would like this fight to go to the ground in my opinion he isnt bad standing up at all. devastating knees fast and furious hands however i think Kampmann has the best style to counter a fireball like Condit. stay on the outside and work his striking. the problem with that is Kampmann isnt likely to stay that patient. what im thinking will happen is Kampmann will begin implimenting his gameplan trying to frustrate Condit and stay away from his big knees Condit whos never been one to shy away from a strike fest will constantly try to pour on pressure. eventually Kampmann is going to move closer in and one of two things will happen A. gets hit with a big shot or B. gets pulled into condits guard which is dangerous in itself.
I got Condit Submission or TKO late second round or early third
One more thing:
while im very excited for that fight and the card looks decent i wanna talk a little about the miller brothers. Jim and Dan are btoh exploding onto the MMA scene in my opinion and no one is talkin about them. Dan Miller submitted Jake rosholt wrestling monster in a minute Jim dismantlet a Matt Wiman after his biggest victory of his career and was on a 4 fight win streak. Jim embarassed him. His only loss now is to Frankie Edgar who is a beast at 155 in my opinion. Dan is smashing guys left and right himself and his only loss is to Mike Mezenzio in a split decision. these guys are both tough and have a fight anyone anytime mentality. They continue to destroy thier opponents and have a combined 5-0 record inside the UFC. Im hopin these guys will get thier just do very soon.
